Centre for Global Education Gaza Fundraising Appeal

The Centre for Global Education is requesting donations in support of a new project we are supporting in the Gaza Strip this Spring.  Gaza is a highly impoverished territory with one of the world’s highest population densities.  Since 2007, Gaza has been subjected to an intensified Israeli economic blockade that has reduced to a trickle the amount of food, medicines and essential day-to-day resources entering the territory.  The British Prime Minister, David Cameron has described Gaza as ‘an open air prison’ where people ‘live under constant attacks’.

As a result of the Israeli siege Gaza’s economy is in a state of collapse, unemployment is rampant and young people go hungry.  According to Save the Children, 58 percent of school children in Gaza suffer from anaemia caused by a poor diet.  Children are also on the frontline of the conflict in Gaza with 344 minors killed in Israel’s bombardment of Gaza in 2008-09 and 34 killed in Operation ‘Pillar of Cloud’ last November.  The constant threat of attack has increased levels of psychological trauma among young people which is manifested as fear, apathy, sleeplessness and difficulty concentrating in school.

The Project

The Centre’s project will deliver education and psycho-social support services to 300 children aged between 7 and 10 years over a period of four months.  The children will be based in three community centres in different marginalised locations in Gaza.  The Centre’s partner, the Canaan Institute of New Pedagogy, will train 9 facilitators to work with the young people to strengthen their numeracy and literacy skills, provide them with structured play opportunities, and deliver skilled counselling to address the effects of trauma.  This project aims to provide sustainable outcomes that will benefit the young people and their communities for years to come.

CGE has received a small grant from the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) Developing World Fund to fund this work in Gaza but we need to supplement their support with donations from anyone who can afford to make a contribution.  Any donation received will be delivered directly to Gaza at the end of March.  There are no administration charges and a full report will be provided in May.
