‘Making the Case for development education in Youth Work’, 9 February, National Library

    NYCI is hosting a seminar ‘Making the Case for Development Education in Youth Work' which will take place on Thursday 9 February (9.30am – 4pm) in Dublin. The seminar will provide youth worker practitioners and policy experts with a space to discuss and debate the link between policy and practice through expert inputs, panel discussions and a good practice showcase. It will highlight key policies at a national and European level that help shape development education practice in the youth sector and examine how the youth sector can influence the development of these policies. Key-note speaker will be the new Minister of State for Trade and Development, Joe Costello, T.D. Other inputs will include speakers from the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, GLEN (Global Education Network of Young Europeans) and local youth organisations from around Ireland who will showcase their examples of good practice in development education.

Centre for Global Education Annual Conference 2012

    The Centre for Global Education Annual Conference 2012 will be held in Dublin on Thursday, 23 February 2012 on the theme “Rising to the Challenge: Development Education in a Changing Local and Global Landscape”. The conference will explore some of the key challenges confronting the development education sector in the current financial climate and shifting policy landscape, particularly in demonstrating the impact of our practice on target groups. It will signpost how the sector can move forward in this context and examine the new opportunities that have arisen for development educators to engage with local audiences on global issues. The keynote address will be delivered by Bobby McCormack of Development Perspectives followed by a panel of speakers and workshops.

    Three bursaries are available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis for minority ethnic organisations.

    About the Workshop
    This workshop will provide an introduction to global learning targeted specifically at the community sector. The training seeks to increase participant’s knowledge of the links between the local and global, build capacity of community workers to support local groups and communities to think critically about global issues at a local level and to provide practical exercises and tools to this end. The workshop will be based on a training course delivered in the south of Ireland by Lourdes Youth and Community Services (www.lycs.ie).

    Booking is essential and registration fees paid in advance. Participation is strictly limited to 16 with priority given to educators who can apply the training in community settings.     The seminar aims to:
    · Enable community workers to become engaged in global education practice.

    · Increase participant’s knowledge of the links between local and global issues.

    · To enhance critical literacy skills and examine how they can be applied at a local level.

    Target Group
    The seminar is targeted at staff, volunteers and management board members of community and voluntary organizations interested in strengthening their practice in global education. It is also aimed at development education practitioners interested in enhancing their links with the community and voluntary sector.
